What is IB to ATAR Conversion?
The IB to ATAR conversion is a standardized process used by Australian universities to convert International Baccalaureate Diploma scores into an equivalent Australian Tertiary Admission Rank (ATAR). This conversion allows fair comparison between IB students and students who completed Australian state-based curricula such as HSC, VCE, QCE, or WACE.
The IB Diploma is scored out of 45 points, comprising 42 points from six subjects (each graded 1-7) and up to 3 bonus points from Theory of Knowledge (TOK) and Extended Essay (EE). The mathematical representation is:
IB Total Score = (Subject 1 + ... + Subject 6) + TOK/EE Bonus
Understanding IBAS (IB Admissions Score)
From November 2022 onwards, IB students in Australia receive an IB Admissions Score (IBAS) in addition to their whole number IB score. The IBAS uses decimal increments (0.25, 0.50, 0.75) to differentiate students who achieved the same overall IB score.
How IBAS is Calculated:
UAC analyzes your performance within each grade band for every subject
Example: if Grade 6 boundaries are 60-69 and you scored 68, you're in the high range of that band
An average position is calculated across all six subjects
The result is rounded to intervals of 0.25 (e.g., 37.00, 37.25, 37.50, 37.75)
This IBAS is then converted to a Combined Rank (ATAR equivalent)
Example: Two students with 37/45 may receive different ATAR equivalents — Student A with IBAS 37.00 = 93.00 ATAR, while Student B with IBAS 37.75 = 93.95 ATAR.

Important Step
