MYP Criterion A, "Knowing and Understanding," is fundamental to academic success within the International Baccalaureate Middle Years Programme. It assesses a student's ability to recall, comprehend, and apply subject-specific knowledge and concepts, moving beyond mere memorization. Comprising typically four strands—demonstrating knowledge and terminology, describing and explaining concepts, applying understanding to new situations, and sometimes analyzing or evaluating—it forms the bedrock for developing other MYP skills. Mastering Criterion A equips students with a deep, transferable knowledge base essential for inquiry, communication, and critical thinking. Both students and teachers can employ active learning strategies, varied assessments, and regular practice to excel, fostering intellectual curiosity and lifelong learning.
