What is ATAR?
The Australian Tertiary Admission Rank (ATAR) is a percentile ranking between 0.00 and 99.95 that indicates a student's position relative to all students in their age cohort. An ATAR of 90.00 means the student performed better than 90% of the cohort.
ATAR Calculation Formula
ATAR = f(Scaled Subject Aggregate)
Where aggregate is the sum of best scaled subject scores
ATAR is calculated differently in each Australian state but all produce the same 0.00-99.95 scale in increments of 0.05.
How ATAR is Calculated by State
General Calculation Process
1
Raw Scores: Students receive raw scores for each subject based on assessment performance.
2
Scaling: Raw scores are scaled to account for difficulty differences between subjects.
3
Aggregate: Best scaled subject scores are added to create an aggregate (varies by state).
4
Ranking: Students are ranked in descending order by aggregate score.
5
ATAR Assignment: Rankings are converted to percentiles on the 0.00-99.95 scale.
State-Specific Methods
NSW/ACT (HSC)
Based on aggregate of scaled marks in 10 units: best 2 units of English + best 8 units from remaining subjects.
Victoria (VCE)
Aggregate of scaled study scores: English/EAL + best 3 subjects (Primary Four) counted fully + 5th and 6th subjects count 10% each. Max aggregate ~210.
Queensland (QCE)
Based on best five scaled subject results from General subjects, Applied subjects, or VET qualifications at Certificate III+.
Western Australia (WACE)
Uses Tertiary Entrance Aggregate (TEA) from 4 best scaled scores. From 2026, maximum aggregate increases to 400.
