How the AP Biology Curve Works
Section Weighting
The AP Biology exam uses a two-section composite scoring system. Your final 1–5 score is derived from a weighted combination of both sections:
- Section I: Multiple‑Choice (60 questions, 90 minutes) — accounts for 50% of the composite (60 scaled points). Questions test all 8 units with emphasis on data interpretation and experimental design.
- Section II: Free‑Response (6 questions, 90 minutes) — accounts for 50% of the composite (60 scaled points). Includes 2 long FRQs (10 pts each) and 4 short FRQs (4 pts each), totalling 36 raw points.
The Scaling Formula
Your raw MCQ score (0–60) counts directly as 60 composite points. The FRQ raw total (0–36) is scaled to 60 composite points: FRQ Composite = (Raw FRQ / 36) × 60. The two sections sum to your final composite (max 120), mapped to a 1–5 AP score.
Why Thresholds Shift Year to Year
The College Board adjusts cut‑off scores annually based on exam difficulty and student performance. The thresholds in this calculator use 2022–2025 data with a ±1‑point buffer. Historically, AP Biology cut-offs have been relatively stable.

2026 AP Biology Exam Format & Structure
The 2026 AP Biology exam is 3 hours long and divided into two equal sections.
